LACE UP FOR KIDS PROVIDING NEW SHOES FOR THE CHILDREN OF ATHENS COUNTY

July 7, 2015ATHENS- July 7, 2015- In preparation for the upcoming school year Athens Wendy’s restaurants, Athens County Children Services, and Power 105-WXTQ-FM are excited to begin the 17th annual Lace Up for Kids; a back to school program dedicated to sending area children back to school with new gym shoes. As a result of Lace Up for Kids, it is expected that over 300 Athens County children will be ready to take on a new academic school year with a new pair of shoes.
The local Athens Wendy’s restaurants, Athens County Children Services, and Power 105-WXTQ-FM, are asking the Athens County community members to support this project by purchasing a pair of new tennis shoes, child or adult sized, and dropping them off at the Wendy’s locations on Richland Ave, or East State St., Power 105 on Columbus Rd in Athens, or at Southern Ohio Copperheads home games.
The Southern Ohio Copperheads have also got involved and will be hosting “Lace Up for Kids Night” on July 23rd. Attending fans are asked bring a new pair of shoes to the game to donate, and will be admitted free of charge into the game. “This project has always been one that our community has really championed, and it is great to see the creative ways people find to get involved to support children and families”, said Robin Webb, Public Information Officer for Athens County children Services. “That support will go a long way toward sending kids back to school with adequate athletic shoes.”
Applications for families to receive shoes for the upcoming school year will be available at Athens County Children Services in building 18 located at Stonybrook Drive in Athens. Applications will be available now through July 24th between the hours of 9am and 12 and between 1pm and 4pm. Children must be between the ages of 5 and 14, and families must be residents of Athens County to qualify. The shoes will be collected through August 8th and will be distributed to the families on August 12th at The Plains Elementary School.
