ATHENS, Ohio - Athens County Children Services and local banks are teaming up to help fight hunger this summer for children in Athens County. This project aims to provide over 1000 children in Athens County with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches during the summer months, when they do not normally receive consistent meals.

Athens County is among the poorest in the state, and as such many of the children in this county receive a free or reduced cost lunch during the school year. During the summer months, however, it is more difficult for the children to receive consistent meals. This program reaches children in Trimble, Federal Hocking, Athens City, Nelsonville, and Alexander school districts all of which are served by Athens County Children Services’ School Outreach workers.

From May 12th - May 30th, Athens County Children Services are looking for donations of unopened jars of peanut butter and jelly to help provide these children with a much needed meal during the summer months. There will be donation drop off boxes at Hocking Valley Bank, Peoples Bank, First National Bank, Chase Bank, Ohio University Credit Union, Atomic Credit Union and Century National Bank. Donations will also be accepted at Athens County Children Services in Building 22.  Monetary donations are also needed to purchase fresh loaves of bread for the families each week.

Starting June 12, families will begin receiving a weekly supply of peanut butter and jelly. For every child in the home, the family will receive one jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly and a loaf of bread for the duration of the project.

For more information on the Peanut Butter & Jelly Project, please contact Athens County Children Services at (740)-592-3061. Mailing address for donations: ACCS PB&J Project, Bldg 22, 22 Stonybrook Dr. Athens, OH 45701.
