Messenger highlights sibling adoption

February 16, 2010

An article in Sunday’s Athens messenger highlighted the 1943 adoption of a sibling group by a well-known Athens couple. Lewis Richard Luchs, author of the memoir Children of the Manse, recalls the journey he and his siblings made from life with abuse and neglectful parents to the loving home of an Athens Presbyterian minister and his wife.

Richard Luchs had this to say of his adoptive mother:

“Evelyn Luchs became my true, forever, and only mother,” he said. “It annoys me when the assumption is made that she was not my ‘real’ mother or that our strong bond was a fiction or second best.”

To read the rest of the article, please visit the Athens Messenger website. A follow-up article was printed in Monday’s Athens Messenger, this time detailing the memories of Luchs' youngest sibling, Janey Smith. To read this article, please click here.
