Santa Tree aims to fulfill local kids holiday wishes
November 25, 2009As the holiday season begins, children in Athens County will begin dreaming of a white Christmas with gifts under a twinkling tree. For hundreds of local children, that dream would be just that were it not for the generosity of the community in supporting Athens County Children Services’ Santa Tree.
Athens County Children Services and the Market on State are pleased to sponsor the 22nd Annual Santa Tree Christmas Project. This project provided gifts to nearly 1200 children in Athens County in 2008, and is needed to meet the requests of as many children or more this year. The children involved with the Santa Tree are children in your own neighborhood who have been abused or neglected. Other children on the tree come from families where parents struggle to make ends meet.
The Santa Tree, whose ornaments will display the name, age, and several gift requests of a child, is currently on display at the Market on State. Community members are encouraged to pick up ornaments from the tree until the December 14 deadline. This project relies solely on the generosity of the public, and everyone is invited to pick a name from the tree to give a local child the opportunity to have a memorable and happy holiday.
Over the past 21 years of the Santa Tree Project, the dedication and contributions from individuals, community groups, and organizations have given countless deserving children the opportunity to experience a delightful Christmas morning.
