Lace Up For Kids kicks off TODAY!
July 13, 2009 Thanks to Lace Up For Kids, sponsored by Wendy's, Athens County Children Services and Power 105 WXTQ-FM, hundreds of deserving children in Athens County will go back to school with a new pair of shoes. This is the eleventh consecutive year of the program, which originated over 20 years ago in Zanesville, Ohio. As many as 500 pairs of shoes have been donated to the program each year, but the need for shoes continues to grow. With the present economic conditions, it's more important than ever to ensure that children have a new pair of shoes to start the school year with, as they might not otherwise have that chance.
The Athens Wendy's restaurants, Athens County Children Services, and Power 105 are asking community members to purchase a new pair pf tennis shoes and bring them to a Wendy's location on East State Street, Court Street or Richland Avenue through Friday August 7, 2009. All sizes are needed for youngsters in kindergarten through junior high school. There will be a drop-off container in each Wendy's store.
Athens County Children Services will accept applications from families who wish to recieve donared shoes beginning Wednesday, July 8 through Friday August 7 between 9 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Families may stop by Athens County Children Services at 18 Stonybrook Drive in Athens or give us a call at 740-592-3061. The shoes will be distributed on Tuesday, August 18 at the Plains Elementary School.
Local businesses and indidivuals who wish to help out are encouraged to make either a donation of new shoes or a monetary donation. Announcements of contributions by local businesses will be aired on Power 105 throughout the course of the event. Monetary contributions for Lace Up For Kids may be mailed to Lace Up For Kids C/O Wendy's, PO Box 320, Athens, OH 45701 or dropped off at the Power 105 WXTQ/WATH studios at 300 Columbus Road in Athens, Ohio.
