Dont Turn Away Ohio

It is uncomfortable to face up to, but in our efforts to turn around Ohio, we cannot continue to turn away from our communities’ most severe problems and from the poorest of the poor among us.  Families and individuals dealing with serious financial issues; problems caused by domestic violence; addiction or mental health problems are unfortunate realities that don’t go away even if they are ignored.  Our goal must be to help people through these situations.  While challenging even in the best of times, recent failures by the state and federal governments have made accomplishing this goal significantly more difficult.  The failure on the part of government to ensure that all families have sufficient income to meet their basic human needs of food, clothing, and shelter has caused holes in the financial safety net to steadily worsen over the years.  Our government’s failure to prioritize the needs of the poorest of the poor is causing increased hardships among those least suited to survive them.

Athens County Children Services provided the Childrens Games at this years 9th annual Paw Paw Festival. The festival was held at beatiful Lake Snowden in Albany September 15-16.

This was the agency's first time at the Paw Paw Festival and the experience was a great one. We had a very busy kids section and parents really appreciated our presence. Children were bouncing in our inflatable castle, making a hole in one at our putt putt challenge and grabbing lots of fun giveaways at our information table. Parent and kids alike had a wonderful time at our children's area and the organizers of the event went out of their way to thank us for our participation.

We had a great time at this uniique event and staff cannot wait until next year..

Pinwheels, CAP Month, Kidfest in April!!! + Expand

April marks the anniversary of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Since its inception in 1985, organizations dedicated to protecting children have used this special time of year to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse. We here at ACCS are no exception. Our workers devote their time and efforts to keep children safe and to strengthen families. However, we cannot win this fight alone. That is why we use this month as an opportunity to promote public awareness of the need for child abuseprevention.

We will kick off our awareness and prevention campaign on Tuesday, April 2rd at 11 AM with our Pinwheels for Prevention Launch. Each of the colorfu lpinwheels, which will be planted on the lawn in front of the East State street sign, represent a case of reported child abuse in 2006.

In addition to the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign, ACCS, alongside Help Me Grow, will celebrate the Week of the Young Child in an effort to recognize the needs of young children and also to thank educators and others involved in building better futures for all children. This year’s week long celebration will take place the last week in April.

Finally, we will celebrate our largest endeavor to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month, this year’s 19th annual KIDFEST! Held annually at the Ohio University Convocation Center, this year's event is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Admission is $2.

Thousands of children attend Kidfest each year. It is a fun-filled event that teaches fire safety, traffic safety, disability awareness, and other themes, through interactive and educational play presented by local community members, organizations, and businesses.

In addition to appearances by Spongebob and Patrick too, many acts will be performing on the Convocation Center floor throughout the day.

Proceeds from the event will benefit special needs children and their families by sending them to fun summer camps, buying medical equipment, services, etc.

will be displayed throughout the month of April. The pinwheels were planted by Athens County Children Services and Prevent Child Abuse Ohio Tuesday as part of the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign, designed to bring attention to child abuse and neglect in Athens County.

Each pinwheel represents one of the cases of child abuse or neglect in Athens County that was reported to children services in 2007.

“Many people are unaware of how widespread the problem of child abuse is in their own local community,” said Andrea Reik, Executive Director, Athens County Children Services. “Pinwheels for Prevention is designed to show the public in a very dramatic way child abuse and neglect happen in every community and encourage them to focus on prevention as part of an overall plan to break the cycle of abuse.”

Athens is one of 60 counties throughout the state of Ohio planting colorful children’s pinwheels in front of courthouses, playgrounds, libraries and parks. In 2007, there were more than 95,000 reports of child abuse and neglect in the state of Ohio.

To report suspected child abuse or neglect, call 740-592-3061, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For emergencies or after hours, call 1-877-477-0772. Children services is required to keep the referral source’s identity confidential.
